Bad on 1st day, worse on 5th
By John
I hooked this up to a pair of Focal 165's (60 watts RMS) on the front channels (no gain) and an old pair of Infinity Kappa 3-ways (111 watts RMS) on the rears (+2 gain I think). I was enjoying things on a 1-hr trip that first night, and halfway in, the rear speakers started cutting out. Even though I had read about this exact same problem in reviews on here or Sonic Electronix, I assumed it was the old Kappas' fault. Today, I put a voltmeter to the channels to see if it was putting anything out to the rear. I cranked up the volume to instigate the problem, and lost my front/right Focal. So it's not the speakers. I went to check onboard fuses, and the amp doesn't even have any!I appreciate that Rockford wanted to cut corners to make this amp more affordable, but it looks like they went too cheap this time.ps- my build sheet said this amp put on 533 watts. Don't be lured in by other people talking about how underrated these are because of the output pencilled in on their build sheet. When push came to shove, it's still a shoddy amp.Edit 2/28/13: I replaced this unit with the Pioneer GM D8604-4, and it's been solid. Better hardware, clear highs, good midbass, and no signs of fatigue for less money than the RF Prime.

RF R400-4D

I have been a Rockford Fosgate customer for 20 years and this amp does not dissapoint. I have had several Punch amps over the years and currently have a Rockford Fosgate Power series mono amp running my RF Punch P3 12" sub. I was hesitant to try the Prime series amp to run my MB Quarts, but after trying it...WOW. Birth sheet says 544 watts RMS and its giving the Quarts all they can handle. Clean, clear, loud in classic Fosgate style. I had heard bad things about the Prime series, but my favorite installer assured me the quality issues have been worked out with this latest release. How many entry level amps are stable to 1ohm? Not many. Over the years I have been tempted by other manufactures products...JL, Pioneer, HiFonics,Memphis,Alpine....but I always return to Rockford Fosgate. Best amps and subs period. By the way I have been in the car audio game a long time...quality power trumps extra subs everytime for those looking for booming bass. In the 90's I had two 15" Punch subs in a sealed enclosure (250wrms)tied to a Punch 400 amp (200wrms @ 2ohms)and it hit...but now I have a Power 700 mono (700wrms) running one 12" P3 (600wrms @ 1ohm)in a properly sized vented enclosure and it hits harder. Rockford amps deliver the stated RMS wattage under worst case scenario conditions, competitors deliver their stated numbers under best case scenarios. With that said, I recommend this amp for running component sets. If you are looking for a sub amp, I would go with a Punch or Power series mono class D.

Wow!

Even though "prime" may be Rockfords "bottom of the line," this is definitely a top of the line product! I installed it to power two sets of Focal 165 A1 speakers (a 2ohm load) and it does so flawlessly! Compared to the stock head unit (or even an aftermarket one) the power this thing puts out is incredible. As some may know, Rockford tests and RMS rates each all of their amps off the assembly line. Mine arrived putting out 540 watts RMS! Even at full power, the sound stays very clean and the amp only heats up sightly. The connections are all of very high quality and gauge sizes are true. If you want a small, four channel powerhouse then i strongly recommend this amp!
