By alexanderaku
I purchased my Alpine SPS-410 speakers for the dash of a 1985 Trams Am. The Sony speakers I had just didn't have enough wattage, and they never sounded all that good with just using my Pioneer DEH-P47DH headunit - much less would they have using a Kenwood 6404 4-channel amp.Since my 4-channel amplifier is rated 500 watts peak, I needed a much better speaker than the Sonys I had. Since these offered 2-45 continuous (RMS) watts and a peak of about 75 watts each, they fit the build requirements needed at double the specs offered by the puny Sony speakers - and they were the needed much closer match to my Kenwood 6404 output levels.Alpine provides all the brackets for this conversion to the 4x6 dash speaker holes and everything else if just using 4" speaker holes, but they don't provide speaker grilles since these are intended for dash applications. There-after, the work begins. The Trans Am duct work was the first obstacle as the SPS-410 speakers have a rather large heavy magnet for their 4-inch size - and a capacitor glued to the magnet.I could fit the magnet in, but I had to reposition and re-glue the capacitor to clear the ducts in the dash. Simple, no? No, I then had to trim the Trans Am's fiberglass dash component to allow the speakers to fit flush. This took time with a Dremel tool due to the close quarters with the windshield. Finished? No, I then had to remove material from the supplied adapter bracket in order to line up and space everything properly in the dash. I ended up doing this over two days due to the aggravation factor (one star off for that) - I had to relax and keep my temper in check over the slow progress. At last, success! The speakers were in and the factory dash cover fitted back perfectly over the new Alpine speakers. But, I wasn't done - proper 16 gauge wiring then replaced the factory "spagetti" of 18 gauge speaker wiring - that took another day of curbing my temper from the anxiety of wanting to be finished. With the new amp in place, I turned on the Pioneer and began adjusting the amp. From the start of the process, I could tell my new Alpine SPS-410s were a great step up in quality over the Sony speakers - more sound, no annoying rumble at higher volumes, and unbelieveable improvement in clarity. I was even getting a greater spectrum of frequencies that properly reproduced music that couldn't be heard before. Then, I hooked up and tuned my 12-inch Kenwood sealed sub with its bridged 480 watt Kenwood 7201 amp. Sweet! With everything balanced properly, the SPS-410 Alpines could be heard throughout the ranges of volume. If there was anything in my CDs that couldn't be heard, I wasn't aware of it. The system sounded almost as good as the large surround sound system in my den.Bottom line - these Alpine 4-inch speakers are richer in sound than anything else I've heard in a speaker this small - including 4x6 replacement speakers, and a lot of 5-inch speakers. They also have quality materials used in their build that should last quite a while if they aren't abused. They might be a little hard to install in some dashes, but these are well worth the effort - just be sure you have something good to hook them up with and the proper tools before you start. These were a great match with the NOS Kenwood eXcelon 6x9s (KFC-698) I used in the rear quarter panels of the Trans Am. Once the system had been used a while, the accoustics just became even sweeter. There is no problem cranking the volume up or down with these speakers. By Callipygous
Decent speakers for 4" rounds, don't expect too much deebeez out of these though. Aren't very well packaged for shipping, box was a little damaged upon receiving. One speaker was blown upon arrival, not the seller's fault though, bad quality control through Alpine. If you're just looking for some replacements or to upgrade some stock paper cones and you're not planning on amplifying (headunit amp doesn't count) these then go for it.

By THURMANATOR
Im not an expert on speakers, just looking to replace my stock tweeters. simple 2-ways were pretty decent. No bass of course, make sure and buy some 3-ways or a sub if you want quality sound. Good for the price, but still not "SUPER GREAT"....
